THE AMAZING AXOLOTL

THE AMAZING AXOLOTL

The axolotl (Ambystoma mexicanum) also known as"water monster" and mexican walking fish, is only native to lake Chalco and lake Xochimilo (SO-chee-MILL-koh) located in central mexico. Sadly lake Chalco was artificially drained to avoid periodic flooding. Lake Xochimilo also is not in best condition, existing mainly in canals.

Axolotl

due to this there is less habitat for the axolotl to live in. Though the axolotl is called a fish the axolotl is really an amphibian. Axolotls have external gills, features that most salamanders lose as they grow. The axolotl reaches adulthood without undergoing a metamorphosis. Instead of developing lungs and crawling out of the water and out on to land, the adults remain aquatic and fully gilled. Axolotls can reach up to a foot (30 centimeters) in length. The average size for an axolotl is closer to 6 inches(15 centimeters). Axolotls are usually black or mottled brown, but albino and whiter varieties are quite common.

map of where they live
Axolotls are omnivores meaning they eat plants and meat, just like us humans. Axolotls main diet includes: mollusks, worms, insect larvae, crustaceans and occasionally eat small fish. The average lifespan of an axolotl in the wild is 10 to 15 years. Accustomed to being one of the top predators in its habitat, Axolotls have been suffering from the introduction of larger fish in there lake habitat. Predators of the axolotls include birds such as herons.

CRITICALLY ENDANGERED!

ONCE THOUGHT TO BEEN EXTINCT!
